Water heater services
Most water heater calls come down to three things: no hot water (a failed igniter, thermocouple, element or thermostat), leaking (a valve or connection, or a corroded tank), or noise and short supply (sediment). Parts are worth replacing on a younger heater; a leaking tank or a major repair on a heater past about 10 years usually means replacement.

Water Heaters services
Should I repair or replace my water heater?
Repair when the tank is sound and a part has failed. Replace when the tank itself leaks, the heater is past about 10 to 12 years, or repairs keep stacking up.
Age is on the rating plate, usually encoded in the serial number. See how long water heaters last.
What's the difference between gas and electric water heaters?
Gas heaters heat faster and recover quicker but need venting and a gas supply. Electric tanks are simpler to install but recover more slowly.
Problems differ too: gas units fail at the pilot, igniter, thermocouple or gas valve, while electric units fail at elements and thermostats.
Is a tankless water heater worth it?
It can be for households that want endless hot water and lower standby losses, but upfront cost is higher and gas lines or electrical service may need upgrades.
In hard-water areas tankless units need regular descaling. See tankless vs. tank.

Water Heaters questions
Should a leaking water heater be turned off?
If the tank itself is leaking, yes: turn gas to off or pilot (or switch off the breaker for electric) and close the cold-water valve. A drip from a fitting can sometimes wait, but have it checked soon.
How long does water heater replacement take?
A like-for-like tank replacement is typically a half-day job; switching fuel types or converting to tankless takes longer.
Why does my water heater need an expansion tank?
When a check valve or pressure-reducing valve closes the system, heated water has nowhere to expand. An expansion tank absorbs that pressure, which many codes now require.
