Smaller leaks show up as stains, a higher water bill, low pressure or the sound of running water, and the water meter confirms them. Pipes are repaired at the leak when the rest of the system is sound, and repiped when the material itself is failing throughout the house.

What should I do if a pipe bursts?
Shut off the main water supply if it's safe to reach, turn off electricity to wet areas from a dry spot, and open a low faucet to drain remaining pressure. Then call a plumber.

How do I know if I have a hidden leak?
Turn off every fixture and watch the water meter's leak indicator for 15 minutes. If it moves, water is leaving the pipes somewhere.

When do pipes need replacing rather than repair?
When leaks keep recurring, water is rusty or pressure has fallen because galvanized or polybutylene pipe is failing throughout the house.

How quickly should a leaking pipe be repaired?
Active leaks should be stopped right away by closing the nearest valve or the main. Slow leaks inside walls or ceilings should be repaired within days, before they cause mold and rot.
Can frozen pipes burst?
Yes. Ice expands and pressure builds between the ice and a closed faucet, which is why pipes often split somewhere other than where they froze.
What causes low water pressure in the whole house?
A partly closed main valve, a failing pressure-reducing valve, corroded pipe, a leak, or a problem on the utility's side. See water pressure problems.
