Drain and sewer services

Drain problems usually start in one fixture's branch line; sewer problems start in the main line that carries all of a home's wastewater to the city sewer or septic tank. If one drain is slow, it's a local clog. If several drains back up, or the lowest drain in the house overflows, the main line or sewer lateral is blocked or damaged.

How do I know if it's a drain or a sewer problem?

One slow fixture is a drain problem. Several fixtures slowing at once, gurgling toilets, or water rising in a tub or floor drain point to the main sewer line.

The lowest fixtures in the house show a main line blockage first, because wastewater backs up to the lowest opening. See why a drain backs up.

What causes sewer lines to fail?

Tree roots entering joints, older pipe materials breaking down (clay, cast iron, Orangeburg), sagging sections that hold debris, and ground movement.

A camera inspection shows which one, how bad it is and where, which decides between cleaning, a spot repair, lining or replacement.

When is a sewer problem an emergency?

When sewage is coming into the house. Stop using all water, keep people away from it, and call.

Sewage carries bacteria; contaminated drywall, carpet and insulation usually need to be removed, not just dried.

Drain & Sewer questions

How often should a main sewer line be cleaned?

Only when needed for most homes. Lines with a history of roots or grease often benefit from cleaning every one to two years, and a camera inspection tells you which applies.

Is hydro jetting safe for old sewer pipes?

Usually, once a camera confirms the pipe is structurally sound. Badly cracked or collapsed sections need repair first.

Who is responsible for the sewer line between my house and the street?

In most U.S. cities the homeowner owns the lateral from the house to the city main or property line. Rules vary, so check with your sewer utility.
