Kitchen remodel plumbing

Short answer

Kitchen remodel plumbing covers the sink drain and vent, water supplies to the sink, dishwasher, refrigerator and pot filler, the disposal, and gas for a range. Keeping the sink on the same wall is simplest; an island sink needs a drain run through the floor and a venting solution, which is one of the more involved kitchen plumbing changes.

Sink location

Drains need a continuous slope and a vent. Moving a sink along the same wall usually means extending existing lines. Moving it to an island means running the drain through the floor (easy with a basement or crawl space, harder on a slab) and venting it. Traditional vents run up through a wall, which islands don't have, so island sinks use approved alternatives such as an island loop vent or, where local code allows, an air admittance valve.

Upgrades while it's open

  • Replace old galvanized supply or cast iron drain pipe behind the sink wall.
  • Add quarter-turn shutoff valves.
  • Clean or inspect the kitchen drain line, where grease buildup is common: see drain cleaning.
  • Confirm gas line capacity if you're upgrading to a larger range.

What affects the cost

  • Whether the sink stays on its wall or moves to an island
  • Floor type below the kitchen (basement, crawl space, or slab)
  • Number of appliance connections: dishwasher, fridge, pot filler, RO, instant hot
  • Gas line changes for a new or larger range
  • Replacing old drain and supply piping behind the sink wall

Common questions

How much does it cost to move a kitchen sink?

It depends mainly on distance, the floor structure and venting. Moving along the same wall is usually far simpler than moving to an island, especially on a slab.

Can I put a sink in a kitchen island?

Yes, with a drain route through the floor and an approved venting method. It's easier over a basement or crawl space than on a slab.

Does a dishwasher need an air gap?

Some jurisdictions require a countertop air gap; others accept a high loop in the drain hose. Check local code or ask the plumber.
